How to Use the Calculator

The NU GWA Calculator is a free tool for National University Philippines students. Estimate your General Weighted Average based on your course grades and unit loads in seconds.

  1. 1Enter each course name, numeric grade point (0 to 4), and a positive unit value.

Formula

How GWA is Computed

GWA is calculated by multiplying each course grade by its unit value, summing all results, then dividing by total units included in the calculation.

GWA =

(Grade₁ × Units₁ + Grade₂ × Units₂ + … + Gradeₙ × Unitsₙ)

÷ (Units₁ + Units₂ + … + Unitsₙ)

Example: 3.5 in 3 units + 3.0 in 3 units + 2.5 in 2 units → (10.5 + 9.0 + 5.0) ÷ 8 = GWA 3.06

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is this website affiliated with NU Dasma or National University Philippines?
No. This is a personal website I created as an NU student to help fellow students calculate their GWA. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by NU Dasmariñas (NU Dasma) or National University Philippines. Always verify your grades with the official NU student portal or your registrar.
2. What grading scale does this calculator use?
Enter numeric grade points from 0 to 4, not percentage scores. The calculator cannot convert R, Dr, Inc, P, or F into grade points. Ask your registrar how those marks affect your official GWA.
3. Can I save my grades for next time?
Yes. Your grades are automatically saved in your browser's local storage, so they'll still be there the next time you visit - as long as you use the same browser and haven't cleared your data.
4. How do I share my GWA with a friend?
After clicking Calculate, a share button appears next to your GWA result. Click it, enter your name, and copy the generated link to share with anyone.
5. What GWA do I need for the Dean's List?
The estimate uses a 3.25 threshold for Second Honors and 3.50 for First Honors, with no numeric grade below 2.5. This checks only the entered grades. Your campus must confirm eligibility, including course load and other requirements.

Tips for Improving Your GWA

For worked examples, cumulative averages, and special-grade handling, read the GWA calculation guide.

1. Prioritize high-unit subjects
Subjects with more units have a greater impact on your overall GWA. A 3-unit course affects your GWA far more than a 1-unit PE class - so focus your energy where it counts most.
2. Avoid failing grades at all costs
A numeric 0.0 lowers your average and does not meet this calculator's honors thresholds. If you're struggling, seek help early rather than letting it reach that point.
3. Track your grades every semester
Use this calculator after each term to check your weighted average. Course grades and exam scores are different: this tool does not predict the exam score you need.
4. Take remedial courses seriously
Retaking a failed subject and passing it improves your transcript and academic standing. Treat remedial courses as a second chance, not an afterthought.
5. Balance your unit load
Taking too many units when you're not prepared can hurt your performance across all subjects. Plan your semester wisely and know your limits.
